FAQS
General Questions / Eligibility
What is HelloDoc?
HelloDoc is a virtual walk-in clinic offering fast, affordable access to UK-licensed doctors through secure video consultations. Our platform allows you to have a doctor's consultation without booking an appointment, with the aim of connecting you to a doctor within 15 minutes of accessing the app. Through our service, doctors can provide prescriptions, sick notes, specialist referrals, and diagnostic test requests when clinically appropriate.
What do I need for my consultation?
You will need:
- A valid and current form of photo ID
- A strong internet connection (Wi-Fi, 4G or 5G – home Wi-Fi preferred)
- A private, quiet space to ensure confidentiality
- An iOS or Android smartphone with a functioning camera and microphone
- The latest version of the HelloDoc mobile app
Do I need to be registered with an NHS GP to use HelloDoc?
No, you don't need to be registered with an NHS GP to use HelloDoc. Our service is a private healthcare option that operates independently of the NHS.
Can I use HelloDoc if I am under 16?
If you are under 16, a parent or legal guardian must create and manage the HelloDoc account on your behalf using your correct personal details. Both you and your parent/guardian must be present during the consultation, and both need to have valid forms of photo ID. HelloDoc may request evidence of parental or legal guardian responsibility where appropriate.
Can I use HelloDoc from outside the United Kingdom?
No, HelloDoc is only available to individuals physically located in the United Kingdom at the time of consultation. Prescriptions issued through our service are valid only within the UK.
Is HelloDoc a replacement for my regular NHS or private GP?
HelloDoc is not intended as a complete replacement for your regular GP, but rather a complementary service. We provide on-demand consultations when you need quick access to a doctor. If you have an NHS or regular GP, we recommend maintaining that ongoing relationship for continuous care. For visitors to the UK without a local GP or those who prefer private healthcare, HelloDoc offers convenient access to qualified doctors when needed.

Yes. HelloDoc GPs follow strict guidelines for safe remote prescribing in accordance with UK medical regulations. We do not prescribe medications that:
- Require close in-person monitoring
- Have high risk profiles or narrow therapeutic windows
- Are classified as controlled substances
- Need specialist oversight or initial assessment
- Require regular physical examinations or laboratory tests without recent results
Medications we cannot prescribe include, but are not limited to:
- Controlled substances including strong opioids (e.g. morphine, oxycodone, tramadol), benzodiazepines (e.g. diazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam), Z-drugs (e.g. zopiclone, zolpidem), Gabapentinoids (e.g. pregabalin, gabapentin) and ADHD medications (e.g. methylphenidate)
- Medications requiring monitoring such as antipsychotics, mood stabilisers (e.g. lithium, sodium valproate), and anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin). However, our doctors may continue these medications if:
- You can provide recent relevant blood test results
- You're stable on your current dose
- Your regular NHS care team is involved in your ongoing care
- High-risk treatments including isotretinoin, clozapine, and medications under NHS shared care arrangements
- Specialist treatments like biologics, injectable medications, and hormone therapies requiring specialist initiation
- Reproductive healthcare including emergency contraception and medical termination of pregnancy that require in-person assessment
Our GPs will always explain if they cannot prescribe a requested medication and will help direct you to appropriate local NHS or private services where proper evaluation can be conducted.

Are consultations covered by my private medical insurance?

Can I use HelloDoc if I have an ongoing condition?
Yes, HelloDoc can be used for ongoing conditions that are stable and suitable for telehealth management. Our doctors can provide advice, prescribe certain medications, and offer follow-up care. However, some complex chronic conditions may require in-person assessment, and our doctors will advise you if your condition is not suitable for telehealth management.
What should I do if the doctor refers me for a test or to a specialist?
If you're referred for tests or to a specialist, the doctor will explain the reason and the next steps during your consultation. When tests are ordered through HelloDoc, results are requested to be sent directly to us and will be uploaded to medical record once received. You’ll be notified (via email / in-app notifications) when results are available. If you're expecting results, please monitor your notifications and contact our support team if you haven’t heard back within the timeframe advised by your doctor.
